Fixing Your Surface Pro 3 Driver Crashing Issues
So you are sitting there, minding your own business on your Surface Pro playing games and browsing Facebook. But wait! Your Surface has other plans, you get the deathly Driver Crashing Of Doom! Okay, so it is not that bad but your screen locks up and your app can crash. The fix is thankfully pretty simple.
The first thing you need to do is grab the drivers directly from Intel. The Microsoft provided drivers are the issue. For my SP3, the drivers are located at https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/25620/Intel-Graphics-Driver-for-Windows-7-8-1-10-15-40-6th-Gen-. You will want to download the ZIP version of the drivers. Make sure this is the right driver for your make and model before continuing.
Once download, extract the ZIP file, we will use it in the next step.
In order to update the driver, you need to go to the Device Manager which is pretty simple. Type Device Manager into the search and open the Device Manager.
Now that you are in the Device Manager, expand the Display Adapters. Right Click on Intel(R) HD Graphics 5000 and select Update Driver Software.
A Driver Update Menu will appear. Make sure you choose Browse my computer for driver software and we will select the driver from the ZIP file you extracted.
Navigate to the folder you extracted earlier. Select the Graphics folder and press OK. Select Next and continue until the install is complete.
Reboot your computer and you now have the Intel Drivers installed. You should no longer have any of the driver crashing issues. You should also notice you also have the Intel HD Graphics tool which has some extra settings you can change.
This should work on Surface Pro 3, Surface Pro 4, and the Surface Book.
Enjoy! Comment below if this worked for you.
