Over $44,000 awarded to Apps4Halifax Winners

The Contest

The recent weekend that just passed left many developers and young entrepreneurs jumping for joy as some heard their names called out to receive a prize.

The apps4halifax contest officially came to a close on January 18, 2014 as numerous developers, sponsors, and guests attended the Appsalute Award Ceremony. If you are not familiar with apps4halifax, it is a contest which kicked off the celebration of Open Data being available to the public in Halifax. It was meant to encourage developers to make apps for people of HRM that would be useful. The contest was a huge success as HRM gained 38 amazing apps which had many different purposes. Some apps gave users real-time bus updates, while other apps gave users control over viewing historic locations in the area.

To view all the apps created, head on over to http://apps4halifax.ca/apps to access them all. There are apps built for browsers, and mobile such as iOS and Android.

There were plenty of prizes to be won in this contest. With 4 categories and multiple prizes per category, everyone had a chance. Developers could create apps in one, or more categories, including Keep’er Movin, Go Green, Your City and Live It Up. Each category allotted first place (Gold) prizes of $5,000, second (Silver) $3,000, third (Bronze)  $1,000, student $1,000 and peoples choice $1,000. There were also additional ERSI Prizes which encouraged the use of ERSI technology which is a framework of map technologies.

Congrats to all winners and if anyone is curious, yes, everyone who won received those enormous cheques and yes, they were awesome. I hope Halifax continues this contest as it is obvious based on feedback that numerous of these apps have been getting lots of usage and are improving the lives of people within HRM.
